President Muhammadu Buhari married his first wife, Safinatu, in December 1971.

Hajiya Safinatu was born on December 11, 1952 in the Plateau state capital, Jos, but hails from Mani in Katsina State.

His father's name is Alhaji Yusuf Mani, while his mother is Hajia Hadizatu Mani.

She was a student at the Teachers Training College  in Katsina, where she graduated in 1971.

Safinatu met for the first time with President Muhammad Buhari when he was only 14 years old.

During President Buhari's tenure in the Nigerian army, General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua accompanied his late friend to Safinatu's father.

Safinatu's father, Alhaji Yusuf Mani, was working at that time in Lagos as secretary of Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua, who was then Minister of State of the First Republic of Lagos.

From this visit, a constant love story arises between Muhammad Buhari and Safinatu Joseph.



In 1971, Buhari married his first wife, Safinatu (née Yusuf) Buhari (First Lady of Nigeria, December 1983 - August 1985). They had five children together, four girls and a boy. His first daughter, Zulaihat (Zulai) bears the name of Buhari's mother. His other children are Fatima, Musa (deceased son), Hadiza and Safinatu. [163]

In 1988, Buhari and his first wife Safinatu divorced. In December 1989, Buhari married his second and current wife, Aisha Buhari (née Halilu). They also had five children together, one boy and four girls: Aisha, Halima, Yusuf, Zahra and Amina. [164]

On January 14, 2006, Safinatu Buhari, the former First Lady, died of diabetes. [163] She was buried in the Unguwar Rimi cemetery according to Islamic rites.

In November 2012, Buhari's first daughter, Zulaihat (nee Buhari) Junaid, died of sickle cell disease two days after giving birth in a hospital in Kaduna.
