Manchester United saw Mat Ryan as a potential replacement for David De Gea

Manchester United are considering a surprise signing of Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan, David De Gea decided to leave Old Trafford, according to reports in England.

Report shows that the Red Devils are evaluating the possibility of a replacement for Spain international in terms of the possibility that De Gea decided to end an eight-year spell at Old Trafford.

The same article stated that the heads of Manchester United believed that Australian international Brighton could be an advanced substitute for a 27-year-old shot stopper.

According to the same story, the 20-time British champion believes Ryan is in the right moment in his career to move to one of the Premier League's leading clubs.

De Gea has entered the final year of his current contract, even though Manchester United has the option to make a one-season extension.

However, The Sun claims that the Red Devils are really worried that the Spanish number one player can leave on a free transfer in the next two seasons.

De Gea has consistently been Manchester United's best player since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, after leading the Red Devils to the 13th title under his management.

While the former Atletico Madrid star struggled in his first season at Manchester United, De Gea has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League for the past four seasons.

Ryan, on the other hand, was chosen as Belgium's best goalkeeper after serving a two-season assignment with Club Bruges before moving to Valencia's La Liga club in 2015.

The Australian international sealed a £ 5 million transfer to Brighton in the 2017 summer transfer window and Ryan has had great success at Amex Stadium.

Number one Brighton has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Seagull since moving to the Premier League club.
