46-year-old Pastor Absconds With Car Belonging To His Church Member

A pastor got into serious trouble after disappearing in the car of a church member after asking for prayers.

A 46-year-old pastor, Joseph Lawson, appeared in Lagos on Monday in front of an Ikeja Magistrates' Court accused of stealing a car worth 1.2 million euros.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, the defendant committed the crime on October 1 in Oko-Oba, Lagos.

He said that the defendant had run away from Mr. Chikwukadibia Udeh's car.

"The complainant turned to the accused for prayers, the defendant told him that God had told him to bring his car and the document to prayer.

"The complainant obeyed and after the defendant had collected the car and his document, he was nowhere to be found.

"The complainant's efforts to get his car back were unsuccessful and the case was reported to the police," the prosecutor said.
Ogu said when the defendant was arrested later, he claimed to have sold the vehicle.

The offense violates Paragraph 287 of the Lagos Penal Code, 2015.

The news agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section has three years in prison for theft.

The accused, who lives in Surulere, Lagos, makes a "non-guilty" request for the charges against him.

The judge, Mr J. A Adegun, granted the defendant a security deposit of N 200 000 with two guarantees as part of the bail.

Adegun said the guarantees should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos government.

The case was postponed for hearing until 29 October.
