US Hurricane Florence Weakens To Category 1 Storm

The meteorologists of the United States yesterday lowered the hurricane Florence to a storm of Category 1, since its outer edge lashed the Carolinas with strong winds and heavy rains.

In its warning at 0300 GMT, the National Hurricane Center said the maximum sustained winds in Florence were 90 miles per hour (150 kilometers per hour), falling to the weakest of the five categories on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

But the storm still carried "very dangerous winds," the Center added.

On Wednesday, Florence was demoted twice from its peak as a Category 4 storm causing "catastrophic damage".

But Brock Long, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, warned residents to take the storm seriously regardless of the category.

Meteorologists continue to warn of storm surges, excessive rains and catastrophic floods.
