Nigeria Teaching Hospital To Conduct First Open Heart Surgery

The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) will perform its FIRST open heart surgery by the end of September, the Chief Medical Director said.

Prof. dr. Lawal Khalid, who reported to reporters in Zaria yesterday, said the operation was the culmination of years of careful planning and upgrading of the hospital's capacity.

According to him, ABUTH performed the operation in collaboration with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), a national open heart surgery center in the country, and a university in Ghana.

He said the hospital has set up a cardiothoracic center with state-of-the-art facilities to perform the operation, and says it is the first time that open heart surgery is performed in the north.
