Senator Godswill Akpabio and President Muhammadu Buhari

The former senatorial minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said on Wednesday that he had decided to leave the opposition Democratic People's Party for the ruling All Progressive Congress after discovering that "President Muhammadu Buhari is a a man of integrity and nationalism ".

He pledged to take the people of Akwa Ibom State and South-South to the center for "meaningful visibility".

The former 55-year-old governor of Akwa Ibom state officially left the opposition PDP for APC power at a large rally at Ikot Ekpene Stadium.

He told the huge crowd that he had decided to join APC because he had discovered that President Muhammadu Buhari "was a man of integrity and nationalism".

Akpabio said he had decided to join a party that would sweep away poverty and impunity; pointing out that he joined APC to "help save the country".

"The country is at war and all hands must be on the bridge to save the situation and not make it worse.

"As guardians of national emergencies, everyone should put their heads together and I decided to join us in empowering people and providing relief to the people."

He said today's PDP has no vision and leaders are arrogant.

Earlier, the Director General of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Nsima Ekere, said that changes had been made to Akwa Ibom and south south.

He said that Akwa Ibom had joined the progressive states because people were not happy with the long mismanagement of the PDP.

He said that Akpabio built people and provided them with infrastructure, but the current PDP government was a failure.

Ekere said the population had agreed to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
