Suicide Bomber Kills Self In Failed Suicide Attempt In Borno Market

The Borno Police Command said on Sunday that the tragedy was averted when a suicide bomber who was heading to the market detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by mistake by committing suicide alone.

Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Maiduguri, said the incident occurred on Saturday, at about 7:20 p.m. in the general area of the Monday market.

He said the attacker was heading to the market, where he saw a massive crowd to detonate the IED attached to his body.

"The suicide bomber found a massive presence of police and other security deployments at the Oando station, near the post office, and detonated the explosives in a hurry, killing himself alone.

"More police personnel have been deployed in most of the capital and other flashpoints in the state.

"This is to ensure the safety of lives and property, especially in the remaining days of the Ramadan fast and when Eid el-Fitr is approaching," he said.

He added that the explosive ordinance team of the police deployed quickly to disinfect the area and make it safe.
