The popular reggae artist, Ras Kimono, is dead.

A close family source confirmed this to Channels Television in a telephone interview on Sunday.

The source revealed that the reggae musician was taken to a hospital in Ikoyi after he collapsed on Saturday.

He added that Ras Kimono died later in the hospital on Sunday.

He also confirmed the death, a factional president of the Nigeria Copyright Society (COSON), Tony Okoroji told Channels Television that he had visited the legendary reggae musician at the hospital.

Okoroji, who said he shook hands with Ras Kimono, lamented: "This is a terrible loss for the music industry."

"COSON regrets announcing the death of a first-line member of our council: a great African musician and great musician, the reggae roaster, the great Ras Kimono Onwubuya," he added in a text.

Similarly, the president of the Association of Performing Musicians of Nigeria (PMAN), Mr. Pretty Okafor, said he was surprised when he received the news that the reggae artist had died.

Ras Kimono jumped to stardom after the release of his debut album 'Under Pressure' in the late '80s.

His style of music was significantly influenced by the difficulties he experienced in his first years of life.

The last icon of reggae music won several awards, including the Nigeria Music Awards and Fame Music Awards, among others.
